A Statement from Reverend Father Robert T. Cooper to the Parishioners of St. Benilde Catholic Church
Throughout the course of our history God has blessed America. I believe that we have been blessed because America has been a generous country and has sought the good of our fellow human beings. In its history America has sought to do the right and to do the good. It is important that we never lose sight of this.
For our Founding Fathers their understanding of God as the author of life and the guarantor of freedom is a message that needs to be re-emphasized in our own day and our own society. We must not let God be pushed to the margins of American life or be totally removed from the public square. We have already had an experience of what happens in a society when God is removed from public life and allowed to be acknowledged only in places of worship. In the totalitarian and communist regimes of the last century we saw the results of a society that allowed freedom of worship in the confines of a building but kept God out of the body politic.
We must let our voices be heard in the public square and we must not allow our freedom to practice our faith to be compromised by allowing it to be defined as simply a right to worship God within the confines of a Church building.
Let us pray that the time will never come in this country when we must choose between being an American and being a Christian. May God bless America and may our faith flourish in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
