On behalf of the faithful of St. Benilde Catholic Church, our hearts go out to the victims and families tragically impacted by last night’s unspeakable shooting at the movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. We offer our prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives, and we extend our deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones.
In the United States, we have been witness to, and victims of, tragic shootings at schools, workplaces, shopping malls, movie theaters, and houses of worship. These senseless acts of violence remind us to be diligent and aware that evil and sin abound in places that we don’t expect to experience them. When will it stop? The simplest answer is: only when we can turn the culture of death, so prevalent today, into a culture of life. I pray that we hear God’s call for a more profound respect for all human life and work to build communities of peace and justice.
May everyone affected by this horror feel the comforting presence of the Lord Jesus surrounding them during this difficult and tragic time. Together, let us denounce all forms of violence against humanity and work to protect all human life created by God. During Masses this weekend, we will remember the deceased, their families and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.
